The NNCK are a mysterious bunch. Their ethos seem to be staunchly anti-corporate (or at least, not at all sales driven) as they have no website, low, hard to find pressings of their records, cryptic cover art, and well, cryptic everything. I have no idea who plays on the 6 records of theirs I have (though I assume all the naked men played on the Ken's Electric Lake 2xLP). Aside from that unnecessarily revealing picture, NNCK are a faceless collective of strange, otherworldly, free, avant noise wanderers. Supposedly Side A of this LP was recorded live in Detroit on the 4th of July, 1999. Side B was "recorded in undisclosed locations." Also, this is supposed to be a lineup of NNCK that never saw an official release. Side A is made up of drums, a horn (saxophone?), prominent guitar(s?), some very weird vocal yelps and mumblings and of course, unidentified sounds. Altogether, this is the most focused NNCK I've heard. There are a few moments where the guitar or horn (or both) lock in with the drums and edge toward a krautrock sound. The abstraction and fractured tonality kept at full keel all the while. The first song on Side B, "The Sound of Violins" which has two guitars, vocals, drums and (toward the end) horn, is a tribal incantation. The drums pound drunkenly, the guitars are maniacally dissonant, while the vocals pepper the proceedings conjuring Al Johnson's Native American counterpart. The second (and very short) track, "Unafarmer" is muddier. Made up of flute and mumblings largely, with percussion in the back of the mix like a hammer at the base of your skull. If you have ever been interested in hearing NNCK, I recommend this. If you already like them, I recommend this. If you have already heard them and don't like them, I recommend pulling your head out of your ass, and getting this.
