Don’t be fooled by the casual title of this release; you will hear a veritable Ghost in the Machine cloaked in pure electronic sounds. Japanese composer Toshimaru Nakamura goes beyond the furthest reaches of sound in his mission to cross the border to the other side. This time it falls to dancing poltergeists and hellish, rattling machines to scourge Nakamura’s soundscapes. Toshimaru Nakamura is known worldwide as the master of the no-input mixing board. From out of nowhere he manages to conjure up the most insane of sounds. Nakamura is on a quest to find the unheard and is latest creations on ‘Dance Music’ bear witness to the fact that he is willing to pursue that quest to the furthest extremes. This release contains two large pieces of more than twenty minutes and just under fifty minutes in length. This music will literally throw you off balance. The widest of frequencies will softly caress the inside of your skull, cause your eardrums and sing in unison with your feverishly screeching nervous system. The music takes its time and alternates between ominous silences, deeply resonant drones and alienated, crackling pulses to create a restless yet inherently contemplative soundscape. Softly, your head will rock to and fro to try and find its optimal listening position. You will not find it easy to shake these sounds off. These compositions emanate a ghostly aura, an eerie feel that remains in the air after the pieces have come to an end. Nakamura is on to something here and those willing to take the risks are invited to follow wherever he may take them.
