Maherr has previously split his time between a plethora of monikers, from the chopped and screwed hiphop of DJ Yo Yo Dieting to Sisprum Vish's lo-fi noise, developing the gritty collage sensibility which he's mastered to a disturbing degree here. As the first of a two-part set, 'Plays Wagner' surveys the same Badalamenti-inspired psy-chromatic mindscapes as Leyland Kirby's recent trilogy, creating visions of cask-strength industrial ambience using samples of Wagner records sourced from Portland's fruitful thrift stores. This is timelessly evocative music, using the doom laden drama of Wagner's original compositions and the muffled, organically textured camouflage of tape to create hypnotic swells of ghostly resonance which seem to peel away from the record like the dilapidated wallpaper of a log cabin in Twin Peaks. Dry-rotting drones permeate the sound, unsticking the grey sonics from the surface, suggesting the same long-term processes of cognitive decay which the Caretaker applied to his 'Theoretically Pure Anterograde Amnesia', with equal amounts of disorienting effect. Having mastered the album from well worn cassette to vinyl, the engineers at D&M have maintained the grimy integrity while beefing it up for wider consumption, finishing an artefact of exquisite beauty and harrowing late-night pleasures.
