here’s something i’d been meaning to do for years, and thanks to the constant (friendly) prodding of arbor’s mike pollard it’s now a tangible reality ...
starting with a single 60-second loop-cassette of a field-recording made during the saturday afternoon of the 2008 no fun fest, i started running the signal through the doepfer, recording exactly 225 minutes of improvisations & “variations” - utilizing the pitch-control of two sony walkmen & the filters & processing agents in the synth itself ... these were recorded with mic’s on the woofers of two studio monitors, so that the sounds in the room whilst i was recording (patching, the occasional cough / murmer, and at one point, a bag full of ping pong balls) could be heard ...

4 x auto-reverse cassette decks, each plugged into a different amplifier / stereo speaker-set (or 4 x boom-boxes with detachable speakers) in the far corner(s) of a room (wood floor, no carpeting) - speakers for each corner / unit should be placed as far apart as possible to accentuate the inter-channel movement of each taped component.
start all decks simultaneously ; there will be short pauses at the end of each tape-side as the decks flip, then 1-minute silence(s) at the end(s) of the second side(s) of each tape. as the tapes begin to loop, they synchronize in different ways, causing an endless array of variations.
use of different brands / models of tape-deck / boom-box recommended. play loud, quietly, or anywhere in between. adjust individual components to taste ; use of fast-forward, reverse, & tape-speed manipulation encouraged.
the set itself turned out very nicely, with mike’s designs coating the outside of an “audiobook” style plastic folio, with the four cassettes mounted inside along with a metallic insert w/ the text above ...
