Nearly 40 years after it originally soundtracked Kobi Jaeger's erotic educational movie, 'Kamasutra', Irmin Schmidt's highly revered masterpiece finally receives a full release on Crippled Dick Hot Wax. Alongside Malcolm Mooney, Jaki Liebezeit and Michael Karoli they formed Inner Space, the precursor to their better known incarnation as Can, just prior to recording their seminal debut 'Monster Movie'. The film was produced for the sexually liberated, post-'68 German market, starring Barbara Schöne and Bruno Dietrich as the central characters in a narrative that switched between an exotic, ancient India and present day Germany, requiring a soundtrack to match. Like many bands of this time searching for the "New Music", Inner Space (whose members had studied under Karlheinz Stockhausen) were intrigued by eastern philosophy and influenced by oriental sounds, which would inspire much of this record. Among the percussive psyche-rock tracks are several laidback and panoramic instrumentals using flutes and sitars, woven into the fabric of the material in a manner much as you'd expect from members of Can. There are also two charming vocal tracks, 'I'm Hiding My Nightingale' sung by Margarete Juvan, and the raw blues stomp of 'There Was A Man' sung by Malcolm Mooney. BOOMKAT
