Sound and video artist MPLD works in a world of sentiment and detachment, creating a Lost & Found aesthetic uniquely his own. Lost are the old Kodachrome slides which make up the foundation of his work. Found are the feelings of misplaced memories the slides conjure, as well as the sounds — processed and amplified — of the projectors that bring those images back to life. What’s seen on lacunae is a straight shot of the screen during a rehearsal for a concert, although that might not be clear to the viewer. There’s no real scale of reference for the first five minutes, until what seems to be a horizon appears within the flickering oval. The field of vision divides then into sputtering halves and the medium, if still unclear, begins to seem distinctly analogue. With a bit of orientation, the working method slowly begins to emerge. The strobe of the projection and the pulse of the soundscape appear to sync up. A second landscape bolsters the geography of the first. As the visual sources become apparent, they raise questions. Is this invasive? Are we trespassing upon someone else’s past? People rarely appear in MPLD’s visual, and when they do they’re certainly not recognizable. So are we stealing sentiment from others, or just reaffirming it within ourselves? MPLD says he “likes to step away from the emotion” of his source material.
