Esther Ferrer, born in San Sebastián, Spain, has been noted for her work in performance art as a solo artist and as a member of the seminal ZAJ group. Her work has always been oriented to ephemeral artistic action rather than to permanent artistic production. In the '60s in collaboration with the painter José Antonio Sistiaga, she created the first "Workshop for Free Expression," an activity that was to inspire other similar groups in Spain. Since the 70s, she has also been active in the plastic arts. Her work is a very particular kind of minimalism, which she sometimes terms "rigorous absurdity." She has performed throughout Europe, Cuba, the U.S, Japan and Korea, and in 1999 was one of the two artists representing Spain in the Venice Biennale.
Tom Johnson, who received B.A. and Master of Music degrees from Yale University and studied composition privately with Morton Feldman, has lived in Paris since 1983. He is considered a minimalist, but proceeds in a more logical way than most minimalists, often using formulas, permutations, and predictable sequences. He is best known for his operas which include The Four Note Opera (1972) and Riemannoper. His largest composition, the Bonhoeffer Oratorium, for orchestra, chorus and soloists with text by the German theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer, was presented in Maastricht, Berlin and New York. His recordings are available on Lovely Music and XI and his writings include The Voice of New Music (Apollohuis), a collection of articles written for the Village Voice from 1971 to 1982. In 2000 he received the French national prize in the "Victoires de la musique" for Kientzy Loops.
