Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe

Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe (b. 1975) is an artist and composer who works with his voice in the realm of spontaneous music, most often under the Lichens moniker. Modular synth patch pieces and tonal vocal work have been the focus of his live performances and recordings recently. The quality of sound achieved through the marriage of synthesis and the voice has allowed for a heightened physicality in his ecstatic music both within live and recorded settings.

Grasshopper Republic (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)
*200 copies limited release* In the opening moments of Grasshopper Republic, composer and sound artist Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe (Candyman / Master / Telemarketers) soundtracks images of hands rubbing, counting, and exchanging thousands and thousands of Uganda banknotes are juxtaposed with a heap of grasshoppers escaping or overflowing from a hole in a woven basket. Underscoring this is a rising tide of crystalline tones that hover from the high frequencies of the right into the deafened space of …
End of Summer
End of Summer captures Jóhann Jóhannsson's journey to the Antarctic Peninsula to discover the calm scenery of a landscape changing seasons, barely influenced or even noticed by humanity. The Super 8 film is a comforting study of a peaceful setting in one of the most crucial and endangered areas of our planet. Accompanied by rich and detailed field recordings of the surroundings, this footage forms a perfect foundation for Jóhannsson's musical compositions, performed together with fellow musician…
Flower of Sulphur
Flower of Sulphur is a transfixing piece of continuous improvisation from three experimental luminaries : multi-instrumentalist YoshimiO, internationally acclaimed percussionist Susie Ibarra, and artist Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe (Lichens). The trio’s jaw dropping performance was recorded in December 2016 at Roulette in Brooklyn. Flower of Sulphur documents a singular evening of exquisite sound and exceptional performance. Kulthan
Extended hypnotic explorations from Brooklyn’s experimentalist Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe (Lichens, OM). Two long-side pieces of futuristic afro-dub, slowly evolving arrangements of voice and modular synthesizer soundscapes. Ethereal and melancholic on the first side with Magnamite, exhibiting 'the relationship of machine and human, showcasing the coupling of the two instruments'. Drifting and wildly pulsating on Heart of Sogguth that 'transforms this relationship into a unified human machin…
Levitation Praxis Pt 4
Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe’s incredible recordings with Harry Bertoia’s sound sculptures are here documented on a beautiful new edition for Demdike Stare’s DDS imprint, coinciding with his appearance on the cover of this months issue of The Wire magazine. Lowe is something of a polymath; having started out as part of Math Rock outfit 90 Day Men and doom metal trio Om, he progressed to forge his own solo work (often under the Lichens moniker), as well as a slew of collaborations including work…
Two Orb Reel
Brand new full-length by modular synth experimenter Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe (Kranky/DDS/Type/Holy Mountain), with this one revolving around the concept of a soundtrack for African science-fiction. It's an alien trek of a record, soundtracking emotions of wonder, fear and transcendence. "Lowe has made some of the most transcendent music of recent times ('cerebral music in the best sense of the word')"  (Music & Literature).
Timon Irnok Manta
2015 repress. Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe has been through many shifts in his musical career, from playing with influential Chicago rockers 90 Day Men and forging haunting vocal drones as Lichens all the way to becoming a member of transcendent rockers Om and collaborating with Lucky Dragons and Doug Aitken. Timon Irnok Manta marks the beginning of a brand new stage in his process. Recorded under his full name and based on fabled British science fiction series The Tomorrow People, the record esta…
Cognition / Observation
Demdike Stare’s DDS imprint coax out the first solo trip in 4 years from polymath Rob Lowe (a.k.a. Lichens, and member of Om, 90 Day Men). Litio Folk
Rob Aiki Aubrey Lowe (Om, 90 Day Men) swiftly proceeds his stunning 'Timon Irnok Manta' side for Type with a humbling, stripped down suite crafted almost entirely from his own vocals, subtly layered with some synth work. 'Lítió Fólk' feels at once vast and intimate: Lowe's vocals resonate deeply, instinctively - quavering notes and curling overtones centre the sound within the body - while the layered and sustained drone structure seems to draw the spirit ever outwards, drawing enchanting melodi…
