Angus MacLise

The late percussionist, poet, calligrapher, mystic, shaman and visionary Angus MacLise was pure '60s free spirit all the way. He was a founding member of the Velvet Underground -- but promptly quit as soon as he found out they were being paid to play their first gig. A list of MacLise's collaborators and compadres reads like a who's who of American counter-culture mavericks: La Monte Young, Marian Zazeela, Terry Riley, Tony Conrad, Henry Flynt, Jack Smith, Andy Warhol, Gerard Malanga, Charlemagne Palestine, Jonas Mekas, Sheldon Rochlin and Ira Cohen. MacLise's work has made him a bona fide legend among vintage psychedelia enthusiasts; his intricate, India-influenced drumming propelled any number of tranced-out jams in New York's lofts of the era.

Inspired by his friends Jack Smith and Bill Devore, Cohen’s initial experiments with black light developed into an experimental ritual space he termed the Mylar Chamber―a simple room of hinged boards hung with reflective Mylar film. Through his extended network, and with the support of artist and set designer Robert LaVigne, Coh…

Astral collapse
"Latest excursion/exploration into the genius of the late great Angus Maclise that will throw you back into that insomnia haze you truly enjoyed, if you’re old enough. Stripped back focus on the artist and his compositions, some of which are the last things he ever recorded. In the 70s, Angus’s interest in tape music, noise, and the extreme gradualisms of music had reached its apex, and these pieces were born. Nowhere else will you hear Angus shredding apart the circuits of an arp synthesizer, o…
