The songs on this album – because they are actually songs, not tracks, typically starting with spoken parts over ambient musical accompaniment, building up tension with gloomy narratives and then launching into hymnic choruses – take the post-rock approach of Wolf City pretty far into the realm of quasi-metal at certain points. The particular charm of the songwriting on the album is that the classical piano, violin, and flute (and occasional saxophone) so characteristic of NLC's duo sound combine and contrast with the distorted, guitar-driven approach of Wolf City in a way that is so fresh and unexpected that it prevents the rock elements of the album from ever becoming clichéd. Preserved on this album, the surprising collaboration between NLC and Wolf City fortunately becomes a permanent beauty rather than a transient one.
