George Cacioppo

George Cacioppo (1926-1984) was born in Monroe, Michigan, and studied composition with Ross Lee Finney at the University of Michigan (bachelor's 1951, master's 1952). In 1961 he co-founded the ONCE Group with Robert Ashley, Gordon Mumma, Roger Reynolds and Donald Scavarda, whose Ann Arbor festivals ran from 1961 to 1968. He wrote experimental scores with unconventional notation, such as Cassiopeia (1962), and was influenced by astronomy, mathematics and poetry. He was visiting lecturer at the University of Michigan and presented a new music programme on Michigan public radio.
