Goffredo Patrassi

Goffredo Petrassi (1904-2003) was born in Zagarolo, near Rome, and died in Rome. He studied composition at the Santa Cecilia Conservatory from 1928 to 1933 with Vincenzo di Donato, taught there from 1940 to 1960 and gave master courses until 1978. His early work was neoclassical; later he moved toward post-Webernian influences. He wrote Coro di morti (1941) and eight concertos for orchestra (1934-72), and his students included Franco Donatoni, Cornelius Cardew and Ennio Morricone. Musica da camera (Mode) pairs him with Luigi Dallapiccola, with Ensemble Dissonanzen playing Petrassi's Sestina d'autunno and Seconda Serenata (1962).
