Bryn Jones (1961 to 1999) never travelled to the Middle East and was not a Muslim, yet from Manchester he made hundreds of records in the name of Palestine and against Western policy in the region. Working as Muslimgauze from 1982, he layered hand drums, dulcimer, radio voices and found sounds from the Arab and South Asian world over heavily phased drones and rhythm programs that collide, stutter and cut off without warning. The music came out in editions of a few hundred copies, mostly on Staalplaat and Soleilmoon, so his influence spread slowly through tape trading and collectors.
