Richard Youngs

Richard Youngs is a British musician with a prolific and diverse output, including many collaborations. Based in Glasgow since the early 1990s, his extensive back catalogue of solo and collaborative work formally begins with Advent, first issued in 1990. He plays many instruments, most commonly choosing the guitar, but he has been known to use a wide variety of other instruments including the shakuhachi, accordion, theremin, dulcimer, a home-made synthesizer (common on early recordings) and even a motorway bridge.

Three:four Split Series Volume 3
2025 Stock. Last copies. Annelies Monseré always has had the urge to record many versions of one song and then remaining deeply in doubt which version to choose. For this release, she did not chose. (Though this is not completely true - there are still more versions of the song - including an a cappella version) She was interested in how different arrangements, tempo's, melodies and structures changed the expressive and aesthetic qualities of the song, convinced that no version is more 'essentia…
Metal River
New album by another favourite artist here at FD, whose work can traverse everywhere from avant-folk or otherworldly pop to minimalist electronics or some of the most fervent 'outer sounds' one can dredge from the deepest crevices of their doubtlessly life battle-scarred imagination. On Metal River, Richard Youngs offers four songs of deep space beamed curdled electronics not far removed from being akin to the contorted death caterwauls of a cyborg species reaching out in uttermost anguish. It's…
Onder/Stroom
Zonder Stroom, meaning 'sans electricity', was a short-lived program curated by Extrapool with performances that were completely without electricity (no amplification, no lights, no fridge) and one bleak and damp winter's afternoon we drank coffee and decided to use all the electricity there was, recording any keyboards, synthesizers and electronics they could lay their hands on. Then they tried to make sense of that day. This album features mixes and remixes of one joyful and intensely creative…
Core To The Brave
Hits w/ a shock & never lets up. Composed of what appears to be blown out bass & spastic drum rhythms, these tracks cascade into shimmering loops of distortion, their weight reaching a critical mass that often feels like it's on the verge of ecstatic collapse. Everything is elevated further in & up by that one & only voice, floating over top like a lush wind come down from the mountains.
