Taku SUGIMOTO Guitar Quartet

Taku Sugimoto counts as being a forerunner of those Tokyo music scenes which work with extreme calm and extended periods of silence. For three years Sugimoto organised a monthly series of improvisations with Tetutsi Akiyama and Toshimaro Nakamura. In 1985 he co-founded the psychedelic rock-band Piero Manzoni, which lasted till 1988, then in the same year he brought out his first solo LP "Mienei Tenshi". In 1991 he turned his attention exclusively to the cello and with the alt-saxophonist Hiroshi Izui and the guitarist Michio Kurihara founded the group Henkyo Gakudan. In 1993 he was briefly a member of the psychedelic rock-band Ghost, then in 1994 he joined the avant-garde Hikiyo string quartet centred on Tetutsi Akiyama. In the same year he brought out the CD "Slub" as a solo cellist. Since then he has given the cello up. His music has become increasingly quiet and concerned with silence.
