Tubby Hayes

Tubby Hayes (1935-1973) was the most formidable British jazz musician of his generation: a tenor saxophonist of ferocious speed and harmonic invention, who also played vibes and flute. Professional at fifteen, he co-led the Jazz Couriers with Ronnie Scott and won rare respect in New York. Albums such as Mexican Green and Down in the Village remain peaks of British hard bop. He died at thirty-eight.
