Geschrieben in Wasser
On geschrieben in wasser., Klaus Lang pares the piano quartet down to a faintly breathing organism, letting soft, slowly shifting harmonies hover at the edge of audibility like something written on water just before it disappears.
Homestead
Kory Reeder composed Homestead (2024)—a nearly hour-long string quartet in four movements with an interlude—during his residency as Artist in Residence at Homestead National Historical Park in Beatrice, Nebraska in 2023. As he explains: "As a fifth-generation Nebraskan, growing up on the native lands of the Chatiks si chatiks people (Pawnee), this project is a part of my process of learning, listening, and developing a relationship with the land and its stewards in my home state: a beautiful pla…

Comprising seven works for various configurations of string ensemble, masterfully executed by Apartment House, that nod across time toward Italian polyphonic compositions of the 16th and early 17th centuries, the diverse history of Minimal…
Distant Musics

The album includes Exit Music for string trio, Gridwor…

It is a work that rewards repeated, attentive listening and the discovery of subtle, shifting textures.
Sound Pieces
Sound Pieces is a collection from Pauline Oliveros performed by Apartment House. The album spans seven works from 1975 to 1998, comprising both open text scores and a structured seven-movement composition, "Tree/Peace." Borderland Melodies

The music explores gradual transformation, intertwining voices, and the shading of tone and silence, creating a meditative sound world where every phrase and rest feels considered and essential.
Naiads
Naiads by Martin Iddon, realized by Apartment House, is a cycle of five chamber works inspired by freshwater nymphs from Greek myth. Each piece constructs its own world of slow-blooming gestures and modestly veiled lyricism, balancing clarity and ambiguity as the ensemble circulates between unison playing, shifting tempos, and suspended harmonies. The result is a collection of subtly haunting, atmospheric music shaped with patient detail.

The album unfolds as an engaging exploration of timbre, space, and melody, moving with characteristic restraint and an ear for sonic nuance. Rather than leaning into complexity for its own sake, the music privileges clarity, attentiveness, and an affection for the understated beauty of ordinary sounds. Central to the album’s ide…
Chamber Works
Luiz Henrique Yudo’s Chamber Works marks an insightful journey into the translation of visual art into sound, presenting music that bridges architecture, painting, and sculpture with contemporary chamber idioms. Brazilian-born and Amsterdam-based, Yudo composes using an original approach that is self-taught, drawing inspiration from structures, patterns, and artworks he admires. The album’s five works are performed by Apartment House, a leading ensemble in contemporary experimental music. Among the Tarnished Stars / Quatuor pour la fin du temps
UK ensemble Apartment House performs two landmark works for the same instrumentation of violin, cello, clarinet and piano: Olivier Messiaen's Quatuor pour la fin du temps (1941) and Toronto based composer Linda Catlin Smith's Among the Tarnished Stars (1998). Released by Another Timbre in August 2019, this recording takes a fresh modern approach to the Messiaen, drawing out its experimental character, while revealing the sense of drama and intricate gradations of sonority in Smith's rich and mys…
Angelica Music
The music of Christian Wolff has long occupied the fertile borderland between composition and improvisation, as both are usually understood. More a set of suggestions than a writ of prescriptions, his scores can take the form of graphic symbols floating freely against a white background—as in 1968’s Edges—or of pitches notated and other parameters left unspecified, as in the Exercises. He is on record as having said that a score is only a means to an end, the latter consisting of the performance…
Assigned #15
Assigned #15 continues James Saunders’s trajectory of modular, context-sensitive composition. Apartment House’s performance (recorded at St Paul's, Huddersfield) embodies Saunders’s philosophy: structure and interpretation are reconfigured for eac…
