Kees van Baaren (1906–1970) was a pivotal teacher and the first major Dutch composer to use the 12-tone technique. Jan van Vlijmen and Peter Schat were his prominent students at the Utrecht and Hague Conservatories. Schat and Van Vlijmen (along with Louis Andriessen, Reinbert de Leeuw, and Misha Mengelberg) were part of the Notenkrakers (Nutcrackers), a group of activists who famously disrupted a concert at the Concertgebouw to protest the conservative programming of Dutch musical institutions. All four held significant influence over Dutch musical life. Ton de Leeuw was a leading composer and educator known for integrating non-Western musical concepts. Van Vlijmen later served as the director of the Royal Conservatory in The Hague and the Dutch National Opera.
