A publication of considerable documentary value, capturing a pivotal moment in the emergence of Catalan and Valencian experimental composition as a distinct and self-conscious creative force. Encontre de Compositors I - published by the Institut d'Estudis - is the catalog and document of the first Encounter of Composers, bringing together figures whose work had been developing largely outside mainstream institutional circuits: Llorenç Balsach, a Catalan music theorist and composer whose investigations into harmonic resonance and spectral phenomena would become foundational for subsequent generations; Amadeu Marin, a Catalan composer operating at the intersection of new notation and spatial music; and Llorenç Barber (born Aielo de Malferit, 1948), the Valencian composer who had founded the interdisciplinary collective Actum in 1973 and become the most radical and consistent promoter of experimental music in Spain.

Barber's trajectory - through Cage's philosophy, ZAJ's neo-Dada, American minimalism, and toward his own highly distinctive practice of plurifocal music, graphic scores, and ultimately his celebrated city concerts for bell towers - makes this publication a document of a genuinely alternative current in Spanish music: one that rejected the post-Darmstadt academicism of the dominant Madrid school and built its practice from democratic participation, graphic notation, and the physical resonance of found materials.
