“The A-side features Young and Zazeela vocally harmonizing with a constant pitch sine wave generator, Zazeela maintaining a fairly stable pitch while Young moves up and down the scales, although he can’t quite reach the lower end (but then, who could?).”

This early exercise in Western minimalism by husband-and-wife duo La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela was originally released in 1969 in vanishingly brief quantities on a German label. The 2023 reissue on Superior Viaduct (possibly spurred by an earlier 2023 release on CD-R bootleg label Creel Pone) brings this early work to a wider audience.

The record itself is two separately recorded performances, both sidelongs, named after the date and time of recording. The A-side features Young and Zazeela vocally harmonizing with a constant pitch sine wave generator, Zazeela maintaining a fairly stable pitch while Young moves up and down the scales, although he can’t quite reach the lower end (but then, who could?). The vocals sound almost synthesized at points. Hypnotic and entrancing.
