Adam Bohman

Adam Bohman is also a familiar figure on the London improv circuit, typically to be seen hunched over a table filled with a bewildering array of gadgets and everyday objects (as illustrated in the booklet photo here) from which he methodically extracts sounds, a shock of red hair either side of his pate, looking equal parts obsessive professor and bemused fourth-year geography teacher. He pops up from time to time in the London Improvisers Orchestra, and he and his brother Jonathan have, in the past few years, instigated and run small gig spaces - the now defunct Charteris in north London, and the Bonnington, in south-west London - at which they regularly perform in what is, it has to be said, a rather painful duo, which is in turn frequently augmented with a guest musician.

Music and Words 3
Coming 8 years after Volume 2 and 23 years after the first installment, Volume 3 of Music And Words is the 4th solo release by Adam Bohman on Paradigm Discs. All 4 releases have focused on his earliest recordings, mostly from the 80s, mostly domestic and all using cassette recorders. There are 4 principle styles that are employed in this early phase of Adam’s work - most unexpectedly there are songs, often constructed with trumpet as the lead instrument, then more typically there are improvised …
The Hague trip
Adam Bohman arrived on October 8, 2011 in The Hague, the Netherlands for a one-off improv concert with Richard Crow. For two days he recorded his adventures on his vintage taperecorder resulting in a kaleidoscopic aural collage.
Bagpipes and blackberries
Adam Bohman : unamplified objects. Jean-Michel Van Schouwburg : voice.Recorded at Oxo Studio by Adrian Northover on 18th July 2014. Edited and mastered by Adrian Northover. A senses stimulating meeting, recorded in central London's former slaughter house, Oxo Tower. Piching Adam Bohman's scraped and scrunched clutter with the hum and bubble of Jean-Michel Van Schouwburg's voice. Unimagined pitches and timbres collide and oscillate, drawing the listener into an ever deepening, real-time sound scu…
Music and Words 2
"Music and words 2" is the much delayed 2nd installment in an ongoing series of archival documents of Bohman's early work. As with the first volume, this CD is divided into 2 separate areas of his work. Adam is probably best known as an improviser, playing prepared instruments and objects, but the music here uses little of these purely improvised techniques. On this CD the musical sections consists of idiosyncratic lo-fi songs alongside short collage pieces and other experiments, recorded on ste…
The car boot sales
A recent collaboration between these sound experimentalists consisting of both musicians’ passionate relation to found objects and recycled material treated as instruments. Devoted solo performers of free improvised music, also members of the London Improvisers Orchestra, Tasos Stamou (modified electronics, prepared zither, found violin) & Adam Bohman (amplified objects, prepared balalaika and prepared violin) create layers of “instant” musique concrète which balances between narrative structure…
From the Hip
The Bohman Brothers (Adam and Jonathan) team up with Leonard Aspen and Roger Boulding to form Ischio Romantico Ð the result is this album called From The Hip which is a combination of the Bohmans' amplified objects and raw electronics and the smooth hypnotic loops and turntable inventions of Aspen and Boulding (who have collaborated extensively with Xentos Jones and Lepke B of Die Trip Computer Die). Urbane Deserts vs Sylphides' is a ballet in four parts. Leonard's libretto (undisclosed) describ…
For Hugh Davies
A unique celebration of the work of Hugh Davies, one of the great pioneers of improvised music who died three years ago. Solo recordings of Hugh from three decades ago are played back to a trio of musicians whose work has been influenced by Hugh, and they improvise around his music to create a living homage to his memory. Beautiful, strange and challenging music.
Bunhill Row
*500 copies, numbered edition, few available* 1980 was an incredibe year for London’s experimental music scene with many different strands. Recommended Records were rereleasing the first two Faust LP’s, L. Voag had found ‘the way out’, Swell Maps were ‘in occupied Europe’. Throbbing Gristle and other industrialists were giving plenty of live actions. Nurse With Wound had just released their first LP, as had This Heat. The other great LP on Piano Records by Steve Beresford was also on the shelves…
Music and Words
As a member of British experimental group Morphogenesis Adam Bohman was no stranger to wayward sound experiments when recording this solo CD. Favoring acoustic sounds over electronic he explores the minute tendrils of sounds coaxed from any number of non-musical instruments. The standout on this Paradigm CD is a cassette piece which the artist made of candid recordings of mundane experiences and conversations, using the stop-start technique to construct a collage of text and environmental sound.…
