John Coltrane

John Coltrane (1926 to 1967) was an American saxophonist and composer and one of the most influential musicians of the twentieth century. His early recordings show him inside the relatively conventional bounds of bebop and hard bop, with Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk; his lasting legacy rests on the modal jazz of his classic quartet with McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones, from 1960 to 1964, and on the free explorations of his last years. He recorded more than fifty albums as a leader, from Giant Steps to A Love Supreme, Ascension and Meditations.

Essential John Coltrane
John Coltrane’s legacy defies boundaries—not only musical ones. From his early beginnings in Philadelphia to his final, urgent explorations of the unknown, Coltrane continually expanded the language of modern music, transforming the possibilities of the jazz saxophone and redefining the relationship between performer, composition, and spiritual expression. His playing was never merely virtuosic: it was a deeply personal force, capable of moving from the most delicate melodic statements to torren…
Cookin' with the Miles Davis Quintet
“Few bands in the history of jazz have reached the heights achieved by this group... The entire LP is fantastic. I cannot imagine being without it.” – Ralph J. Gleeson. These words perfectly capture the enduring power of Cookin’ with the Miles Davis Quintet, a landmark recording by one of the greatest ensembles ever to shape the history of jazz. In the mid-1950s, the quintet brought together Miles Davis on trumpet, John Coltrane on tenor saxophone, Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on double b…
Africa / Brass
In 1961 John Coltrane joined the newly founded Impulse! label. The great saxophonist was coming off several impactful albums (Giant Steps) and a very notable — even commercial — success: that My Favorite Things which had made his soprano sax one of the “new sounds” that marked a turning year for jazz, the fateful 1959. Some people — despite obvious clues to the contrary — speculated a turn, if not toward commerciality, at least toward more palatable music: a Coltrane in some ways comparable to P…

Produced with the full support of the John Coltrane Estate, The Best of John Coltrane draws from the saxophonist…
A Love Supreme
*2026 repress* "One of the most important records ever made, John Coltrane's A Love Supreme was his pinnacle studio outing, that at once compiled all of the innovations from his past, spoke to the current of deep spirituality that liberated him from addictions to drugs and alcohol, and glimpsed at the future innovations of his final two and a half years. Recorded over two days in December 1964, Trane's classic quartet-- Elvin Jones, McCoy Tyner, and Jimmy Garrison -- stepped into the studio and …
Mating Call
Experience a remarkable session led by the legendary pianist and composer Tadd Dameron, recorded in 1956 and featuring the young lion John Coltrane, fresh from his tenure with Miles Davis. Mating Call is a solid and often overlooked gem showcasing six powerful and beautiful Dameron compositions. Performed by an impeccably tight quartet, the album features John Simmons on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums, complementing Dameron’s distinctive bass-heavy piano style. This foundation offers a rich …
The John Coltrane Quartet Plays
Impulse! Records is proud to announce the release of “The John Coltrane Quartet Plays,” an evocative and boundary-pushing album from one of jazz’s most celebrated ensembles. Recorded in 1965, just months after the landmark “A Love Supreme,” this album captures John Coltrane and his legendary quartet—McCoy Tyner (piano), Jimmy Garrison (bass), and Elvin Jones (drums)—at a time of creative transformation and exhilarating intensity. Stereo Drive
2025 stock 180g virgin vinyl limited edition - the complete LP + 2 bonus track. The only album ever reuniting pianist Cecil Taylor and saxophonist John Coltrane, Stereo Drive was released in 1959. Taylor wanted to use Ted Curson on trumpet, but the recording company insisted on using Kenny Dorham. Relations between Taylor, who favoured a very avant-garde approach, and Dorham, who verbally disapproved of Taylor's "way-out" tendencies, were strained, and the session is a unique tour the force.
Best of Birdland Vol.1
Originally released on Roulette Records in 1960, this is a unique and yet often overlooked document in the form of a split album featuring early, little known works by John Coltrane and Lee Morgan. Coltrane, already in full modal flight, is featured with an unusual quartet that includes McCoy Tyner on piano, Steven Davis on bass and the great Billy Higgins on drums. Lee Morgan's straight ahead hard bop set sees the young trumpet genius leading a hard swinging group that includes a fabulous Wayne…
Coltrane's Sound
Complete rendition of the saxophonist’s famed divinely inspired suite was recorded at Seattle’s Penthouse in 1965. Despite being John Coltrane’s most celebrated album, and one of the most beloved jazz albums of all time, A Love Supreme wasn’t a record that the saxophonist touched on much in the live setting. Up until now, most Coltrane enthusiasts have only ever heard a single live performance of the literally divinely inspired four-movement suite that makes up the LP. That will change in Octobe…
Ray Draper Quintet featuring John Coltrane
Recorded in 1957 by Rudy Van Gelder and released in the same year on the New Jazz label, this was a major statement from Ray Draper, who besides working with the likes of Max Roach, Jackie Mclean and Donald Byrd, he has been one of the few tuba players who have made a name as band leader. In particular this quintet date was a courageous step with Draper sharing the frontline with John Coltrane. In fact the two gave voice to a very unusual combination of tuba and tenor sax. An unprecedented instr…
Newport, New York, Alabama, 1963, Revisited
John Coltrane played the long game. Longevity in life wasn’t his lot; his fortieth year being his final bow. That circumscribed career, particularly in its final decade, evinced a trajectory of creative ascendancy that was as indelible to improvised music as it was omnipresent in impact. Charlie Parker arguably wears the posthumous mantle of most influential saxophonist, but Coltrane suggests a close contender in terms of ineluctable clout on those who play the instrument. Practice and the pursu…
My Favorite Things - Graz 1962
What these performances then, and those in Impression Graz 1962, reveal is a great artist in a period of continued exploration and uncertainties, committed to integrating the exactness of order and the abandon of ecstasy, and reconfirming his improvisational quest as a spiritual discipline. But there were profound changes still to come. - Art Longe The four tracks on this release have been selected from the 1962 concert tape which Hat Hut Records has licensed from ORF Stelemark, Graz, Austria. I…
