Tom Zé
Tom Zé (Antônio José Santana Martins) is a Brazilian singer, songwriter and composer, born in 1936 in Irará, a town in the sertão of Bahia. He was one of the musicians of the Tropicália movement in the late 1960s. His songs bend samba and northeastern Brazilian forms into unusual structures, and he has used everyday objects such as a typewriter as instruments. Reissues prompted by David Byrne brought him to listeners outside Brazil in the early 1990s.
