Chinese ambient electronic duo Pasteland Beyond The Clouds (云土境) has officially announced the international release of their self-titled double-CD album via the Sad Disco label. Formed in 2016 in the creative haven of Dali by multi-instrumentalists Huanqing (歓慶) and Liao Kai (廖凱), the project initially gained critical acclaim in China under Modern Sky’s avant-garde BadHead imprint. This globally available edition introduces the duo’s expansive sonic universe to a wider audience, solidifying their reputation as pioneers of contemporary Asian experimental music.
The sprawling double album seamlessly bridges the ancient and the futuristic, blending modern synthesizers with traditional, earthy instruments like the jaw harp. Heavily inspired by icons like Brian Eno and Ryuichi Sakamoto, the duo layers immersive ambient textures with organic field recordings to craft a deeply spiritual, vaporous soundscape. The resulting tracks offer a cinematic listening experience that feels simultaneously grounded in the soil of Yunnan and floating high above the atmosphere, earning the record its reputation as an underground masterpiece.
Presented as a holistic art piece, the physical double-CD release features striking cover artwork by contemporary artist Zhuang Hui (庄輝) and elegant calligraphy by Yang Yi (楊一). The album is now available worldwide on major digital streaming platforms and in premium physical formats through Sad Disco.
