Noah Howard recorded Patterns in Hilversum in October 1971 with two members of the Instant Composers Pool, Misha Mengelberg on piano and Han Bennink on percussion, and issued it two years later on Altsax, his own label. The New Orleans alto player had made his name on ESP-Disk and was living in Europe by then.
The whole album is one free jazz composition split across the two sides, eighteen and a half minutes each. Howard plays alto saxophone and adds bells, tambourine and timpani; Earl Freeman is on bass, Jaap Schoonhoven on electric guitar and Steve Boston on congas.
