Tip! Renascent is the twenty-eighth album by The Durutti Column and the first of new material since A Paean to Wilson in 2010, sixteen years in which Vini Reilly's health and the death of Tony Wilson had made another record seem unlikely. Work began sporadically in 2017 and gathered pace during the lockdowns, in informal sessions built around a small amount of equipment, often at Reilly's own kitchen table.
Keir Stewart produced and arranged the album, and plays keyboards, bass, clarinet and guitar on it; Bruce Mitchell, at the drums with the group since the early eighties, appears on two tracks. Around them the record keeps the balance the Durutti Column has always worked with: Reilly's guitar, unmistakable in its clarity and its delay, set against warm ambient washes, piano figures and quiet electronic pulses, with Sam Morris on French horn, John Ellis on piano and Liz Rossi on violin colouring the edges.
Two younger voices give the album its most striking moments. Caoilfhionn Rose sings on Agonistes and Lucas Elliot on All They See Is Fire, the closing track carried by the CD and the download. Liars and Scammer, released as singles in May and July 2026, show the two directions the album moves in: the first melodic and almost pop in its shape, the second restless and fractured, with Reilly's playing pushed into sharper territory.
The title is exact. This is not a comeback record dressed in nostalgia but a group listening to what it has always done and finding it still open: Echoes in the Memory, Your Shadow at Morning and Your Shadow at Evening work like a set of reflections across the record, and Sargasso Sea and For Friends Everywhere close it with the elegiac tone that has followed the group since Manchester in 1978. Released on London Records, the album also carries a Factory Too catalogue number, made with Oliver Wilson: a deliberate return to where the group started.
