Diamanda Galás is a Greek-American singer, pianist, composer and performance artist, hailed as one of the most extraordinary voices of our time, with a range of over three and a half octaves used as an instrument of shock and mourning. Trained as a pianist and steeped in Greek rebetiko and the blues, she emerged in the early 1980s with works of extreme vocal technique and political charge. Her Plague Mass and the trilogy Masque of the Red Death responded to the AIDS crisis with the fury of ancient lament and biblical curse; later records set the poetry of exile and madness to solo voice and piano.
