*100 copies limited edition* The Smoothing presents as a highly contemporary collection, bringing together murmured field recordings, processed guitars and blurred electronics in a way that unites the outer edges of Hype Williams, John T. Gast’s Gossiwor project, Thomas Bush and The Dengie Hundred, but mostly sounds like the formation of its own internal universe. There is a very murky version of London that is being summoned here, almost certainly translated from a small room late at night, both damp and smoke in the air, and time a mutable construct. There might be just the seven tracks, but what is presented is remarkably vivid and distinct, replete with the sense that its creator has both a very astute ear for texture and composition, and a clear view of their intentions, even if those same intentions are harder for the listener to bring into focus (often a good thing).
Who Nosewise is remains somewhat obscured at this stage, and were it later made known The Smoothing was the work of a more seasoned veteran I’d not be surprised - these really are very evocative songs that hint at a much wider world just being brought into semi-focus. Certainly one of the more assured debuts to come from this mutant city in quite some time. An unconscionably low edition of 100. Interested parties should act accordingly.
