The cult song by Malaria! originated as a performance at a concert in 1981. This was followed by various releases on EPs, singles, maxi-singles, and in the 1990s, also on CD. Between 1982 and 1984, the song was released under the title "Weisses Wasser: White Water." The song has a history as eventful as that of the band Malaria!. Its origins lie in the Berlin punk movement. Founding members were Gudrun Gut and Bettina Köster. Gudrun Gut was also a founding member of Einstürzende Neubauten. Malaria!'s singer, Bettina Köster, was also called "The Hildegard Knef of Punk." Gudrun Gut explained to the Tagesspiegel: "We weren't a particularly democratic group. Bettina Köster and I founded Malaria! and also made the decisions. That was difficult enough for just the two of us."
