Andrew Cyrille

Country: United States

Andrew Cyrille is an American jazz drummer, born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1939 to a Haitian family. He is known above all for his long tenure in Cecil Taylor's groups in the 1960s and 1970s, and he has led his own free and open-form projects from the late 1960s to recent records on ECM. Cyrille worked with Mary Lou Williams, Coleman Hawkins and Junior Mance before joining Taylor. His first album as a leader, What About?, came out on BYG Actuel in 1969, and Dialogue of the Drums (IPS, 1974) is a duo with drummer Milford Graves.
