Country: Brazil

Antônio Carlos Jobim (1927-1994), known in Brazil as Tom Jobim, was a composer, pianist, arranger and singer from Rio de Janeiro. He is counted among the founders of bossa nova, the Brazilian style that merged samba with cool jazz. His songs, among them "The Girl from Ipanema", "Desafinado" and "Chega de Saudade", became standards of jazz and popular music around the world. Jobim began working with the poet Vinicius de Moraes in 1956 on music for the play Orfeu da Conceição, and the two later wrote songs for the film Orfeu Negro (1959).
