Gabor Szabo
Gabor Szabo (1936 to 1982) fled Budapest in 1956, studied briefly at Berklee and within a few years had one of the most recognisable guitar sounds in jazz: Hungarian folk scales, Indian drones and a controlled use of feedback, largely self-taught. He came to notice in Chico Hamilton's quintet, then with Charles Lloyd, before a run of Impulse! albums, Spellbinder (1966) and Jazz Raga among them. With Gary McFarland and Cal Tjader he founded the Skye label in 1968, and his tune "Gypsy Queen" became world famous through Santana's version.
