Harold Land

Country: United States

Harold Land (1928-2001) was an American tenor saxophonist, born in Houston and raised in San Diego, who worked in hard bop and later took in modal ideas. He came to prominence in the Clifford Brown and Max Roach Quintet in 1954, then settled in Los Angeles, where he spent most of his career. From the 1960s his sound drew more and more on the harmonic language of John Coltrane. In Los Angeles Harold Land played with Curtis Counce and led his own bands, recording Harold in the Land of Jazz (Contemporary, 1958), The Fox and West Coast Blues! (Jazzland, 1960).
