Jade Warrior were a British group formed in 1970 around the core duo of Jon Field, on flute and percussion, and Tony Duhig, on guitar. In their youth each had independently fallen for jazz, African and Latin American music, and they met in the early 1960s driving forklift trucks in a factory, soon discovering they shared the same musical intentions. Their early albums for Vertigo mixed hard rock with delicate, exotic passages, but it was the trilogy for Island, Floating World, Waves and Kites, that defined them: instrumental, cinematic music that drifted between whispering ambient calm and sudden storms, drawing on Asian and African colours long before the term world music existed.
