Max Roach (1924-2007) was an American jazz drummer, composer and bandleader, born in North Carolina and active in New York from the bebop years on. With Kenny Clarke he helped move the time-keeping of jazz drumming onto the ride cymbal, and he played on many of Charlie Parker's key recordings. He is also known for We Insist! Max Roach's Freedom Now Suite, recorded for Candid in 1960 and sung by Abbey Lincoln. In 1952 Roach founded Debut Records with Charles Mingus, the label that issued Jazz at Massey Hall from a 1953 concert.
