Philippe Maté (died 2002) was a French jazz saxophonist and composer, mainly on alto. He worked as a studio and band musician in French pop from the early 1960s, and at the end of the decade he turned to free improvisation with the Acting Trio. He worked closely with pianist Jef Gilson in the 1970s. Philippe Maté played in the rock group Les Gamblers and in the Jean-Claude Petit orchestra, and was musical director for Nino Ferrer. The Acting Trio, with André Maurice and Jean-Pierre Sabar, recorded for BYG Actuel in 1969.

of the canonic BYG catalogue - Don Cherry, Anthony Braxton, Musica
Elettronica Viva, Sonny Sharrock, Sunny Murray, etc. - was crucial in
the development of the label's sound …
