Polwechsel

Polwechsel is an ensemble founded in Vienna in 1993 by double bassist Werner Dafeldecker and cellist Michael Moser, with trombonist Radu Malfatti and guitarist Burkhard Stangl. The group works in the space between composition and improvisation, with quiet volumes, sustained drones and slowly unfolding structures. Polwechsel's lineup changed several times: John Butcher replaced Malfatti in 1997, percussionists Burkhard Beins and Martin Brandlmayr joined in 2004, and the later departures of Stangl and Butcher left a quartet.
