Sophie Agnel is a French pianist born in Paris in 1964 who works in free improvisation. Trained as a classical musician, she took an interest in modern jazz before committing to improvisation in the early 1990s. She is known for an extended approach to the piano that reworks John Cage's prepared piano techniques. Agnel has worked with saxophonists Michel Doneda, Daunik Lazro and John Butcher, vocalists Phil Minton and Catherine Jauniaux, guitarist Olivier Benoit and electronic musicians Jérôme Noetinger, Lionel Marchetti and eRikM.

"In my experience listening to the music of both Martin Küchen and Sophie Agnel, I’ve often detected what I perceive to be a (sometimes hidden) strain of romanticism, a deep and dark vaguely lyrical content that one doesn’t routinely identify with fr…
"Radical playing techniques, curiosity and the exploration of sound possibilities create constant tension. Their first trio release Animals brings together 13 tracks full of twists and turns, creative lightness and complex virtuosity."

Sophie Agnel, piano. Olivier Benoit, guitare. Recorded at Césaré, July 2011. Highly recommended ! 'In my mind, the music of Sophie Agnel and Olivier Benoit has always contained something like a disclosure of the intimate. They are not overly prolific…
A veritable tour de force of 'inside' prepared piano playing - preppiano extensif. The whole of a solo set performed at Les Instants Chavirés near Paris. Sophie Agnel's preparations, neither static nor fixed, evolve during the course of her playing a…
