Tony Oxley
Tony Oxley (1938-2023) was an English drummer from Sheffield who worked in modern jazz and free improvisation. Self-taught on the drums, he was house drummer at Ronnie Scott's in London in the late 1960s, backing visiting players such as Sonny Rollins and Bill Evans. He extended his kit with amplification, electronic devices such as ring modulators and pieces of metal, and from 1988 he was a regular partner of Cecil Taylor. Oxley met guitarist Derek Bailey in Sheffield in 1963, and with bassist Gavin Bryars they formed the trio Joseph Holbrooke.
