Hypnomaghia
In the Grassfield
Palais des Bauzards pursued an industrial and electronic variant of the sound that swept into vogue during the first half of the '80s. This compilation digs into the original material provided by the band and offers an amazing selection from start to finish. The sometimes rudimentary though gripping tracks on the first side are emblematic of their early period; for example, "Money" is driven by a screeching rhythm box, distant guitar lines, and a nonchalant voice. Cabaret Voltaire comes to mind.…
Jukebox-Series 002
Trost starts a new 7" series called Jukebox Series, specially for one-time collaborations & projects. The paper-sleeve stays the same, labels are changing, and there's artwork by Lasse Marhaug. This time Christof Kurzmann teams up with Sofia Jernberg (Fire Orchestra) on one side, and with Ken Vandermark and Martin Brandlmayr (Radian) on the other for two versions of the beautiful song "Beggars." The lyrics are written by Joe McPhee.
Jukebox-Series 004
Trost continues its Trost Jukebox Series of 7"s. Mats Gustafsson: tenor and baritone saxophones; Ingebrigt Håker Flaten: double bass; Paal Nilssen-Love: drums, percussion, and megaphone-sampler. It seemed to be a split between The Thing and Shit and Shine but instead they are playing together and make the most awful but visceral racket. Thumping hardcore repeato-punk is married to madcap electronics to well and truly cleanse your ears out once and for all. Both sides sort of sound like the Napal…
Technological Music Vol. 2
A series of calculated disasters wherein compositional intent is exercised to varying degrees before and or after the moment of performance. The Irreproducible Results are single-pass, unedited improvisations featuring borrowed gear configured to maximise complexity and minimise predictability. The remainder are heavily edited constructions utilising detritus of the aforementioned experiments, with the Pulse Matrices continuing a game of formal telephone begun on Vol. 1. Tools include oboe,…

Pondfire
“I grew up on my grandfather's farm in the Muddy Creek basin of North Carolina. My grandfather was Hubert James Slater and was the most important man in my life. As an interesting coincidence we share the same birthday, June 8th. Living on the farm was extremely hard work but at the same time an amazing place to grow up, there were animals of all types and acres and acres of space where two young brothers could very easily find trouble to get into. My favorite place on the farm was the pon…
Safe
140-gram LP version. Having partnered with Bill Kouligas in 2015 to relaunch his Lost Codes imprint as Codes, Visionist takes a defining step forward with the release of his debut album, Safe. The South London artist born Louis Carnell broke during a period of experimentation in UK music when, with the disintegration of the dubstep scene, emerging producers began looking to juke and Chicago house for inspiration. A pair of EPs on Lit City Trax (and a collaboration with Fatima Al Qadiri) in 20…
Trial And Error
Game of Patience is one of the few groups in South East Asia region dedicated solely to the creation of free improvised music. Unconstrained by any given tradition, they draw influence and techniques from both the Asian and Western experimental music traditions. Performing with a focused intensity complimented by mercurial group interplay, they create sharp sweeping shards of improvised noise-jazz, creating textures combining extended techniques and electronics with elements of free jazz, electr…
Still Light, Outside
Still Light, Outside is the fourth album by John Chantler. Originally from Australia but living outside that country for well over a decade, this record marks his exodus from London (where he lived for most of this time) and his relocation to Sweden. Over the four month period leading up to his departure, Chantler made several hours of raw recordings of the pipe organ at London’s St John-at-Hackneychurch. These were then subject to extended processing at Stockholm’s Elektronmusikstudion EMS…

Ssi-5
As a sax player, Junji Hirose has been a prominent figure on the free jazz-improvised music scene since the 1970's. But he has another side: he collects everyday odds and ends and puts them together to create instruments which he uses in noise performance. Hirose calls these noise instruments SSI (self-made sound instruments). In 2013, he released the CD SSI-4 (hitorri-997). This is his new release, SSI-5. To make the SSI No. 5 instrument, he put together about 30 vinyl chloride pipes and, using…

Berlin Bulbul
There are three distinct ways nightingales sing and countersing to each other, beginning late at night and ending by dawn in the first weeks of spring. Most males are ‘inserters,’ meaning that they wait about one second after a neighbor’s song finishes before starting their own. Songs alternate between one bird and another. Then there are ‘overlappers,’ who start their song about one second after their neighbor begins, as if to cover up or jam the neighbor’s signal. It may be some kind of threat…
Switzerland 1974
Soft Machine were one of the greatest UK avant/jazz-rock bands of all time and their work, whether their earliest performances as a psychedelic band, who were contemporaries of, and shared stages with Syd Barrett's Pink Floyd and the Jimi Hendrix Experience, all the way to being one of Europe's best known 'fusion' bands, their work continues to be name-checked by today's hip experimentalists. By mid 1973, Soft Machine had gone through a tremendous amount of personnel turnover and a shifting in t…
