Recently reworked and remastered, this LP was recorded in the 1990s, uniting Lee Ranaldo and Jim O'Rourke (before the Sonic Youth years spent together, of course) with German tape music specialist (and H.N.A.S. member) Christoph Heemann. 'Bloomington, Indiana' is based upon a Lee Ranaldo spoken-word reading, and was originally recorded in the Netherlands during 1994. It features O'Rourke and Heemann manipulating Ranaldo's reading via magnetic tape, creating a morphing new soundscape from the SY guitarist's speech, shifting through robotic, ring modulated electronics and ultimately leaving the corporeal realm in a fashion that harkens back to Alvin Lucier's 'I Am Sitting In A Room'. On the B-side, O'Rourke and Heemann present their 1991 piece, 'Autumn', performed and recorded in Aachen, Germany. This takes on a more conventional (well, relatively speaking) drone-based character, escalating through interesting harmonies, bright synth tones and a climax made from what sounds like discordant harmonium swells.
