Before and alongside Throbbing Gristle, Psychic TV and Coil, Peter 'Sleazy' Christopherson (1955-2010) was a photographer and designer, a member of the legendary design studio Hipgnosis, and later a director of music videos. Gorbals is the first volume of a series devoted to his photographic work.
In the 1970s Christopherson photographed the Gorbals, the district on the south bank of the Clyde in Glasgow, in collaboration with the Citizens Theatre, which stands in the heart of the area. At the time the Gorbals was a byword for poverty, unemployment and violence, and was being torn down and rebuilt, but it was also home to a lively, close-knit community. His black and white pictures follow everyday life in its streets, doorways, shops and empty lots, among children, teenagers and old residents, showing it as both a struggle and a celebration, and preserving the memory of a people and a place that have since disappeared.
