Two legs, a Manhattan sidewalk, Reid Miles' cropping, and one of the four or five most recognisable jackets in the history of the music. What is inside has held up even better. Sonny Clark convened Art Farmer and Jackie McLean in January 1958 with Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones underneath, and made a hard bop record built almost entirely on feel: medium tempos, blues forms, and a pianist whose touch was so light and so behind the beat that everything he plays sounds like it was decided a half second ago. McLean is acidic, Farmer is warm, and the title track walks for over nine minutes without once running out of ideas.
Japanese Blue Note pressing. This is the record that made Clark a permanent object of devotion in Japan long before anyone in America caught up. Deserves every bit of it.
