London artist Flora Yin-Wong presents 60 minutes of new one-take drone recordings, influences from early garage, r'n'b edits and Thai TikTok music. Part of SINK [50], a series of mixes released by Sink exclusively on 50 CDs, each copy one of a kind.
Collagist producer-DJ and Modern Love & PAN alum, Flora Yin-Wong maps rugged terrain between one-take drone noise, drill, R&G, and Thai TikTok tunes, for Liverpool's roving, expansive label, SINK.
An hour-long mix melding original material with cuts that traverse the timeline from early R&G (the R&B-inspired grime style) to drill crud with a signature, dare-to-differ steez. The results feel like an impressionistic joyride across the contemporary soundscape, variously baring nastier fangs in its blast of thorny digital noise, and icy picks of drill, but always sure to resolve in more bittersweet sorts of ambient drone-pop with a mix-taper/collagist license.
To our lugs it conjures a night drive cruising past post-industrial wastelands to glittering new docksides, intercepting stray waves of the hard rap that's lit a real fire in the Scouse belly of recent times, and backseat aux-cord/bluetoothing sounds from her social feeds. The addition of her own blasts of drone noise ideally punctuate and decouple the sequence from the prosaic to the poetic in hypnotic style.
