Four compositions by the Stockholm artist built from modular synthesizers, microphones and self-regulating systems: feedback held at a fragile threshold between order and instability.

Strategy of Tension is a collection of four compositions shaped by feedback and its lingering traces.

Working through tension in its many forms, including feedback, dissonance, resonance, and pitch, the work unfolds as a spectral network of interactions constantly generating new systems in which signals return transformed. What has already passed continues to haunt the present, feeding back into the sound as it evolves. Resonances accumulate, drift, take shape, and spiral outward, only to be drawn back again. The signals extend beyond the horizon of their original impulses, yet remain bound to them, caught in cycles of repetition and transformation.

Built through interactions between modular synthesizers, microphones, and self regulating systems, the compositions move through sparse, slowly evolving sonic landscapes. Grains, pulses, fragments, and ruptures briefly emerge before dissolving back into the current. The sounds seem to develop a logic of their own, a dynamic relationship that balance intention with autonomy.

The title refers to a state of sustained tension. In Strategy of Tension, feedback is neither unleashed nor contained. Instead, it is guided toward a fragile threshold where order and instability coexist, and where every gesture carries the possibility of escalating into uncertainty.

Suspended somewhere in time, the work inhabits a space where sound continually folds back upon itself, generating spectral forms that endlessly reshape the conditions of their own existence.

Joel Danielsson sits at an interesting intersection of Stockholm's experimental music and contemporary art scenes: his music operates through particular attentiveness to material qualities and texture-based sound work not dissimilar to aesthetics of isolationism, while his work with Louise Öhman uses moving image, sound, and archival source material processed through a method of speculative montage to investigate history, technology, and perception.
