“Mejor me voy”, one of Mateo’s most iconic songs, was recorded by Diane Denoir (1966) and by El Kinto featuring Rubén Rada (1968). However, this is the only period version sung by Mateo himself, recorded almost twenty years before his official interpretation alongside Fernando Cabrera (1987). A unique discovery, with subtle lyrical variations that reveal the evolution of his artistic sensitivity.
“Vieja” is an early, intimate composition, most likely dedicated to his mother. An emotional precursor to "Un canto para mamá", but with the raw, warm sound of the El Kinto era. Drums, bass, acoustic guitars, and hand percussion blend into a rhythmic pulse that Mateo and Chichito Cabral called “Toco”: the sonic heartbeat of the Mateísta universe.
