A crucial document of the piano avant-garde of the late 1960s, issued on Mainstream Records as part of Earle Brown's production programme. The roster - Brown himself, Roger Reynolds, Yuji Takahashi, and Iannis Xenakis - spans the American and European experimental traditions: Reynolds, the San Diego-based composer whose work engaged with spatial music and complex notational systems; Takahashi, the Japanese pianist and composer who had studied with Xenakis and whose own compositional work would develop in increasingly distinctive directions; and Xenakis, the Greek-French composer-architect whose stochastic methods and mathematical compositional processes placed him outside every existing category. The piano as common instrument, four entirely different approaches to its possibilities.
