Gryphon stopped recording after Treason in 1977. The founding members played a reunion concert in 2009 and kept performing, and ReInvention, released in 2018, was their first studio album in 41 years. Richard Harvey had left the group in 2016, so the line-up is Brian Gulland on bassoon, recorder, crumhorn and baritone sax, Graeme Taylor on guitars, Dave Oberlé on drums and vocals, Graham Preskett on violin, mandolin, harmonica and keyboards, Andrew Findon on flutes, saxophones, clarinet and crumhorn, and Rory McFarlane on electric and double bass. Taylor also produced, recorded and mixed the album.
The writing is spread across the band. Gulland brings pieces with titles like Pipeup Downsland Derrydelldanko and A Futuristic Auntyquarian, Preskett Rhubarb Crumhorn and Sailor V, McFarlane Bathsheba, while Taylor sets Lewis Carroll in the eleven-minute Haddocks' Eyes. The music combines the early music instruments of the seventies albums with folk melody, chamber writing and a strong vein of whimsy.
