Finland's cosmic showman in early form. 'Sähkömies' pairs cheap analogue gear with sci-fi imagination: lo-fi electro, wonky disco and space-jazz leanings, all delivered with Jimi Tenor's singular deadpan charm. Homemade futurism.

** 2026 Stock. Limited Edition Clear Viniyl ** Sähkömies (“electric man”) is the legendary solo debut by Jimi Tenor, the Finnish multi‑instrumentalist and composer who would go on to blur lines between electronic dance music, Afro‑jazz, sci‑fi lounge and nu‑soul. Released in 1994 on Puu, the offshoot of Tommi Grönlund and Mika Vainio’s Sähkö Recordings, the album documents Tenor’s leap from the raucous oil‑drum experimental rock of Jimi Tenor & His Shamans into a newly minted electronic persona, one that still carried his obsession with saxophone and jazz harmony into drum‑machine territory.

Recorded, written and produced entirely by Tenor in his former New York home, Sähkömies offers a previously unheard mixture of drum‑machine‑driven electronic sounds and Sun Ra‑inspired jazz. Over roughly forty minutes and eight tracks - “Theme Sax,” “Crazy Hammond,” “Union Ave,” “Take Me Baby,” “Matti B,” “Teräsmies,” “Voimamies” and “Travelin Dem Spaceways,” often followed by a bonus “Union Ave III” on some editions - he builds small, self‑contained worlds where minimal acid patterns and future‑jazz melodies share the same narrow, tape‑warped room. Cheap synthetic beats tick in rigid grids, while Hammond organ, analogue synths and tenor sax pour warmth and personality over the top.

Critics have noted how unexpected this analogue‑meets‑synthetic pairing felt at the time, especially coming from Sähkö, then known as a minimalist techno label associated with Mika Vainio’s Ø and Pan Sonic. Tenor’s tracks stick out of that roster like a sore thumb: future jazz miniatures with cabaret flair, laced with acid squiggles and oddball vocals. Yet, as reviewers point out, the blend was largely a matter of necessity and curiosity: working with limited, budget gear in his apartment, Tenor used drum machines and synths as both rhythm section and texture, then layered his characteristic romantic saxophone and organ playing on top, following an instinct for experimentation that had already defined his Shamans era.
