Lost-in-time kosmische/kraut/avant-garde artifact produced by Toby Robinson, aka The Mad Twiddler, circa 1975 for his private Pyramid label. From the moment they emerged during the mid 90’s, mystery has swirled around Psi-Fi’s six Krautrock gems. Each, the label claimed, had been recorded for the long lost Pyramid label, based in Cologne during the 1970’s. Embraced and loved by many, others cried hoax. Some ventured further, implicating the perpetrator - the voice behind this assembly of drifting, dark sounds, as none other than Genesis P. Orridge. The truth isn’t widely known, but the foggy origins provide an added layer of complexity and depth. Was it a band of hippies - a glimpse into the shadowy corners of Germany’s lost underground? Are these the sounds of counterfeiters sworn to secrecy, or a product of the same mind that birthed Throbbing Gristle and Psychic TV - a rich post-modern pastiche. No one knows for sure, but few challenge the album’s musical worth.
As the story goes,The Nazgûl’s lone self-titled LP was produced by Toby Robinson, also know as the Mad Twiddler - the man behind the lost Pyramid label, in 1975. Against its sounds, questions of authenticity drift away. A brilliant, trippy, Tolkien inspired world of ambience, threaded by the ritualism of treated percussion, gongs, distended guitars, synths, tape loops and drones. Feeling far closer to a lost artifact of Groupe de Recherches Musicales than of the 60’s and 70’s psychedelic underground, it’s a stunning effort of experimental sound. Brutal, engaging, and immersive, whether a product of the Krautrock movement or a reimagined conceptualisation of it,The Nazgûl is an effort of wondrous and significant artistic weight. RIYL: Kluster, Stockhausen, Taj-Mahal Travellers, Nurse With Wound, Throbbing Gristle, Lustmord, Cozmic Corridors. 24-bit domain remaster from the original tapes. Includes insert with detailed liner notes by Alan Freeman. LP version includes download code. "A major work of electronic avant-garde -- high quality deep esoterica of the weird and spooky kind." --Alan Freeman
Yet another beauty to have emerged in the hands Guerssen. Highly recommended. Grab it before it’s gone.
